Social Networks Interoperability

1st International Workshop 2009

Social Networks have been a true phenomena of the Web era. Capitalizing on the Web 2.0 buzz, they have provided innovative spaces for web users to interact and share personal and professional information and experiences. Social Networks have attracted tens of millions of dedicated global users and provide compelling tools to enable them to digitally recreate social needs such as sharing photos, keeping up with the latest gossip, and forming groups of personal and professional interests.

However, there are still a number of unresolved Interoperability Challenges to Social Networks. They behave as walled gardens and lock-in users to specific service providers and hence, limit the functionality to find and maintain friends and colleagues across Social Networks. They provide complex mechanisms to specify privacy and other policies for protecting access to personal information and hence, make it difficult to share information across Social Networks that follow existing social norms. Solutions and strategies are now emerging which will drive technology paths for future open and interoperable Social Networks.

objective

  1. The objective of the 1st International Workshop on Social Networks Interoperability is to bring together the Social Networks community and to discuss the technical interoperability issues facing service providers and end users. The workshop will attract researchers, practitioners, end users, and providers to help understand the current state-of-the-art in social networks interoperability, and to plan pathways forward to enable the community to achieve these goals.
